Measures the total DNA concentration of bacteria. This ‘molecular total microbial count’ is a measure for how many microorganisms are present in a sample.
The 16S rRNA gene of bacteria has conserved regions common in all species. This allows to quantify the DNA concentration of all bacteria in a sample.
Unfortunately the copy number of this gene is different between species. So there is no one-to-one correlation. But for a given community of bacteria changes in cell count (number of microorganisms) change this ‘molecular total microbial count’ accordingly.
