FAQ - Identification of Isolates

faq

Please consider our advices regarding preparation and shipping of samples.

What kind of isolates may be sent for analysis?

Isolates as pure cultures on agar plates are preferred. Other cultures possible for direct analysis are:

  • membrane filters
  • agar slants
  • liquid cultures
  • glycerin stocks

The cultures should be not too old, i.e. not grown too much. A single colony is often enough for the analysis.

Please send liquid or glycerin cultures only if you are sure that it is a pure culture. We do not perform any sub-cultivation!

Single- or double-strand sequencing: What's the difference?

No analysis is 100% accurate. Modern sequencers allow 99%, but this means that one base out of 100 may be wrong.

Single-strand sequencing is sufficient for most applications. But if you want extra accuracy we recommend double-strand sequencing, where the alignment of the sequences of the forward and the reverse strand is used for identification.

How long does the analysis take, and how do I get the results?

Typically the analysis takes 3-4 working days after sample reception.

The result report is send as PDF document to all e-mail addresses mentioned in the order form.

What information is in the report ?

Our standard report lists the name of identified species (or closest relative) and the homology with the sequence from the database (number of matching bases; score in percent). If several species with identical score are identified, all these species are listed. Please note that a double-stranded sequencing allows a better matching than a single-stranded sequencing.

On request we can provide additional information with the report, e.g. biosafety level, taxonomical classification of the species, etc.

Is it possible to send a single sample?

Yes, but for the analysis of a single sample we charge a small volume markup.

What are the costs of the different analysis?

For current prices please get in contact. With high sample numbers or regular analyses we offer individual quotations.
