For standard molecular identification we use the sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene of bacteria or the 18S rRNA gene of fungi, respectively. The sequence is used for a database search, and the result (species; sequence homology) is sent as a report.

To differentiate closely related species the sequencing of additional genes may be reasonable:

Bacteria Fungi / Yeast / Mould
16S rRNA 18S rRNA
rpoB gene ITS region
Gyrase-PCR for Bacillus differentiation

Applications:

  • Industrial quality control
  • Confirmatory identification
  • Hygiene monitoring
  • Clinical diagnostics
  • Identification of isolates in research projects
