For standard molecular identification we use the sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene of bacteria or the 18S rRNA gene of fungi, respectively. The sequence is used for a database search, and the result (species; sequence homology) is sent as a report.
To differentiate closely related species the sequencing of additional genes may be reasonable:
| Bacteria | Fungi / Yeast / Mould |
|---|---|
| 16S rRNA | 18S rRNA |
| rpoB gene | ITS region |
| Gyrase-PCR for Bacillus differentiation |
Applications:
- Industrial quality control
- Confirmatory identification
- Hygiene monitoring
- Clinical diagnostics
- Identification of isolates in research projects
